    My newborn son - Thomas

Hi. As you know, very few times I visit this part of the forum, since most of what I shoot is nature and architecture. Anyway, with the arrival of my second boy, I have a new motivation at home for shooting people! .

Besides that, I want to improve my technique on this (people/studio shot). Here is an image of my wife holding our little jewel, Thomas. I used a Nikon 50mm F/1.8 prime, mounted on my D5200. Technical C&C welcomed. Thanks for viewing. Cheers,

You should be proud of the image, the subject and the lady holding the subject!

If this were my shot, son, and wife; I'd consider cropping a bit off the top...

Like you Otávio, I am not a portraitist, feeling much more comfortable in the natural environment. However, I hope I can appreciate a very beautiful portrait. I like the lighting. It gives the image a very 'fresh' and 'bright' feeling.

Everyone will always have thoughts on how to present the final image. I wondered what it would have been like if it was not so tightly cropped at the left hand side? In other words, if we had seen more of your wife's neck?

And .... my many congratulations to you both. And all best wishes to Thomas for a long and happy life.

Congrats Otavio, beautiful image I agree with Richard about cropping the image from the top a bit , I would actually crop and lose a bit of your wife's head.

PS. I can see that Richard uploaded the suggested crop when I'm off line. IMO it looks better.

I can't really offer any critique on this genre, Otavio. Purely as a viewer I find it to be a very tender moment that you captured. But I'll confine my comments to congratulating you and your wife on the beautiful addition to your family. God bless you all. May you grow old together and see your children live happy lives.

    Congratulations from me too Otávio.

I was happy with the original, although now I have seen Richard's version, it does bring us all closer.

If replicating his crop, I wonder if the small white background triangle should be excluded from top left corner?

Wishing all Oliveira's good health and happiness, Dave

Congratulations on your new family member, Otavio - I think you have a very nice shot, but the suggestions that Richard and Dave have made are good ones. I personally would make the changes they have recommended and would take a bit off the right hand side of the image as well, as Richard has proposed. I think that having the eyes closed by mother and son are really what makes this image special.

I personally would have used something a bit longer than a 50mm lens for this shot. but that being said, the only place where I don't like the distortion on your wife's hand. A slightly longer lens would probably give you a more pleasing look.

Dave mentioned "If replicating his (my) crop, I wonder if the small white background triangle should be excluded from top left corner?" I totally agree and if it had been a finished product, I would have either cropped or cloned out that small triangle. I did notice it after I posted the image. However, I didn't feel like going back to the drawing boards and redo the image since, I only posted it to explain what I meant when I mentioned a closer crop.

Sometimes, I am lazy like that...
