    Waif

I came across this photo of my grandson that I took three years ago at a large family reunion on the occasion of my great-nephew's christening. The day was sweltering hot, the kid was tired and, as the only child there who did not speak French, bored. This was a lucky shot a time when I only used my camera for snapshots at family gatherings and the occasional vacation souvenir photo.
I decided to try my first B & W conversion because the kid looks like a waif out of a Dickens novel. I can't say that I'm pleased with the conversion so far and would appreciate any guidance that you care to give me.

P.S. I can post the original color photo if it will help.

Hi Andre. You have a very nice looking grandson I would crop the image from the shoulders as the writing on his T-Shirt is distracting. I would also reduce the highlights on his hair. I'm sure portrait shooters will be more helpful, so I leave the further comments to them.

He did look like him but he is definitely no menace

Thanks for your comments Binnur. Is this what you had in mind?

    Waif

I cropped and darkened his hair as you suggested. I also cloned out the distracting strip on the left and added a touch of grain for a bit of a "nostalgic' effect.

    Re: Waif

    Izzie, David and Binnur,
Thanks for you encouraging comments. I will continue to work on this one because I am not totally satisfied with it. I can't quite put my finger on why. I feel that the 'sanitized' version lost some of the character of the photo but the original isn't quite right either. I will post again if I manage to get it to where I am fully satisfied with it.

    Andre
