Izzie, working with ultra wide in landscape is fun, if a little challenging. In this case I'm sure you noted the river is flowing away from and not towards me. From memory I was perched on a couple of rocks about 6 to 12 inches above the level of the water at bottom left. The camera was hand held using the EVF (no articulated screen on the Df) and I was crouched pretty much as low as possible (with out doing myself a mischief). So that makes the camera position about 3 or 4 feet above the level of the water.
As regards flare/no flare. I wanted to capture the scene with fairly deep shade on the woodland floor interrupted by light patches of sunlight. It seemed more 'authentic' to include the sun rather than obscure it but it was best to cheat to achieve a clean image (as per Rachel's comments). I'm not a fan of star bursts.
Many thanks for your input and good luck with your UWA exploits. I look forward to seeing some.
Superb, really like it.
