Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

Still some processing from my Grant Farm trip...

1 I can't find my head...It was here awhile ago...

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

2 That funk! That's my head over there!!! (Please help ID the other bird walking away...)

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

3 The funk and the fool together...I can't see!

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

4 I am a confused one too...(help with the ID?)

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

5 Because you are both fools??? (My first proper owl shot...)

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

    6 'Couldn't care less...(2nd owl shoot..)

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

7 Why??? (help with the ID here too...)

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

    8 What's the problem again??

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

That it for my static birdies....not really static but they are not flying...I will have some more in the next few days including BIF ones...and other animals...it is raining here so it is processing time...

Thank for looking and commenting if you will...'appreciate it very much.

Nice shots, Izzie. Birds are a bit easier to capture when they aren't in flight. I can't help with the ID - apart from one of Dan's Bald Eagles. You have really nailed that one. Good feather detail and an intelligent expression on the face.

    Hi Izzie,

I'm not sure what those mystery birds are (#7 best guess is some type of hawk) but the crane like one with the feathers on its head is a beauty. Perhaps try looking them up in http://www.allaboutbirds.org/

My favourites are the owls. I like both for the gorgeous detail, lovely poses and the beautiful colours of the leafy background which blend with owl, but I'm especially fond of #5 because the owl seems to be closer to the same level as you as compared to #6...

thanks for the links -- will go there soon at daylight...

Yes...many people were there before me so I shot from the distance as I moved as they moved away, waited for the bird to turn its head around. I seemed to have a thing about owls --- when they see my camera, their head turned the other way so I pretend to ignore it and then when Bill said that the head was turned my way, I shot. Good thing was that I was able to prepare the focus first.

Thanks for commenting and the preference...It was my first real owl shot...I did not catch the flying one at the entertainment area but I have others...'Appreciate your comments very much.

My goodness, Izzie, you shot quite the variety of subject matter on that trip. You handled he exposure well on the eagle and captured awesome detail. The first owl shot has the cleanest BG and you got his eye in there. I have no idea what the dark colored bird is in no.4. The one in no.7 looks like a red tailed hawk. Judging by the noise level it looks as though the original of no.7 might have been underexposed a bit?

Nice series Isabel Actually as you already have a flamingo image (#1) I would crop the flamingo in #2 as it distracts and go for a square crop by eliminating some of the water. This would make the beautiful bird stand out more.

    Hi Izzie,

I'm gonna be nice today - for a change

What I do when I visit places like this is to take a snap of any ID boards/signs they have up - these will be useful later

The don't always have signs of course, plus I have to remember
Occasionally, even if the pen and perch is labelled, you just know it is wrong (because they put the bird in the wrong place). The other trick is to buy a guide book and/or visit their website.

If all else fails, just try sending the place you visited an e-mail with a few smallish images in - I got a thorough reply (within a day or so) from a place (here in UK) when I did this.

    Anyway, this time, you may not need to, I'm no expert, but a little guessing, googling and wikipedia-ing reveals;

#2 The bird walking away is probably a Crested (or Grey Crowned) Crane

#3 is a Mute Swan, but you probably knew that

#4 Looks like a Bataleur (eagle) to me

    # 7 Looks like a Harris Hawk, but there are many quite similar looking birds

Darn, after posting I see Randy already supplied some answers above!

    Cheers, Dave

#8 is my favourite... lovely detail in the feathers and I love the way the beak and feet compliment the autumn leaves on the ground

That'll be a big change...but I will miss your nasties...so I better wait and be ready tomorrow when I upload my next shots...

    You mean, like this???

Some birds, some I cannot ID -- for C&C

There were a lot of birds in that enclosure alone, plus the sometimes wandering peacock who just barge in anywhere so the signs are always wrong...I know we have some knowledgeable birders here so I just rely on them...since these are the ones not easily seen in my backyard...those ones in my backyard now I can ID them and when a bird lands in the feeder my mind automatically knew its breed. VEry knowledgeable people here, like you...thank God for them and you!!

I know, but I have a story there going so I didn't...I love that crested thingie, I wish I have more of them but that was one of those one-shot deal and was only interested in the reflections at the time of the shot...thanks again, Binnur...you have been a big help to my pp today thinking of how I can present a serious side to my shots...many, many thanks...again...
