This is beautiful. I was in the area a few weeks ago but the few good glimpses I got of that mountain were from a different angle with only one peak visible. I did see the double peak one morning while out hiking but it was quickly swallowed up by cloud.

I will have to go back.....

The best views we had were from near Ghorepani. We found that while we were there the skies tended to be clear in the mornings but clouds set in and got in the way later in the afternoon. Of course, that means you have to get to Ghorepani first and that took most of 2-1/2 days of walking from Birethanti.

Yes, the mornings were definitely better but unfortunately because of the fuel crisis and lack of transport a few of my 'early starts' ended up being later than planned. I was doing only one day short hikes from a base in pokhara so it always involved getting out of town first. We'll see what the situation is in the spring and I might have another visit. It's a really beautiful area though.

Not until now. I generally need a very good compositional reason to go mono. Somehow throwing away two-thirds of the data my camera captured is something I do very sparingly.

It's not that I have an issue with B&W as I started out in photography as a B&W photographer and am very comfortable working in that genre.




Just as an aside, I definitely prefer the colour version. In this case I've lost too much of the scene in going monochrome.

Absolutely, all that incredible detail you got especially in the initially too dark foreground - and most of it is lost in B/W

Thanks Rachel & Izzie - the one thing that always keep in mind is that the lowly 8-bit jpeg (256 distinct colour shades in each channel) is capable of displaying 256 x 245 x 256 = 16.8 million distinct shades.

When we go B&W the R, G and B channels are all assigned the same value, so we are down to 256 distinct shades of gray. The math tells me that we have thrown away 99.998% of the data in converting to B&W. That suggests to me that we must be losing something in the conversion.

This is why I tend to think long and hard before going monochrome.

This is a part of the world where there is a strong believe in reincarnation. Some might suggest that perhaps you have seen this mountain before in another life...

And yes, I agree with your comment on the B&W.

I like the B&W version but feel the foreground competes to much with the peaks. You could try just toning down the highlights (which you went to so much trouble to find...) in the foreground to place just a bit more emphases on the peaks.

Looking at the calendar, I realized that yesterday was the day my wife and I trekked to Poon Hill (3210m) before sunrise to see the Annapurna Range, in Nepal. I posted shots at the time, but never got around to posting one of the 6993m / 22,943 ft Machhapuchhre Mountain (which means Fish's Tail in the local language). I think it is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Annapurna range. A lot more work with a problematic foreground and I think this is as good as it's going to get.



Machhapuchhre is a sacred mountain and is closed to climbing.

Living on the West Coast we have no shortage of beautiful mountains but none of them compare with this majestic scene. It must have been awe inspiring to be there. Your PP is wonderfully done.
