I like it. The light at the bottom is a nice balance. The top corners need a bit of extra exposure, maybe. That is only my opinion.

If you follow Mike's suggestion the stairs will appear a bit more precipitous; and then dim the light at the bottom and to make it a bit more 'fearful'.

+1 to Mikes comment and I might even think about cutting out a bit further towards the stairs.

I always find these old passageways so interesting, especially when they have been fit with modern amenities like hand rails and electric lights.
