Mom & Me - C&C are welcome !!

Dear All,

Here in this pic I have tried to capture a Bhutanese baby with its mom. The shot is not posed. I was ready with my camera to shoot them and then I said hello to them and they both looked at me and pressed the shutter. The shot is taken in a small shop where they were selling some handicraft items. On the left side one lady was standing and on the right, there was a pole. So, I have tried to avoid both in my frame.

Did you show her the photo? Nicely exposed and interesting composition, the background works well as the look of surprise on the baby's face is sweet yet fearful looking; especially with the chasing faces below. Mom looks protective.

Yes John . I always show the pic after clicking if the subject is aware and I love to see the happy smile on their face. If it's a child then by showing pic , I try to talk to them and most of the time they get friendly and open up. I really love it.

Hi Tejal,

I find the clothing has so much sharp (zingingly sharp) detail, not to mention the colours, that they divert my attention away from their faces.

Perhaps the camera even focused on the clothing? (understandable given it was a grab shot)

It may therefore suggest you might take action by softening the clothes and sharpening the faces?

I can see why you have framed/cropped as you have based on the subject's body, but that stack of bags in front of mother doesn't help either - perhaps try a crop that eliminates them (and her finger tips)? Although - that then 'chops' her through the elbow, which isn't good either.

This is why I don't attempt street/candid photography myself, I like to be in control and get put off (with my own shots) by the uncontrollable aspects that almost inevitably get in to the shot. Perhaps I should try harder!

That's also not to discourage you; since despite my perception of these shortcomings, the shot is still educational to me, living in a different culture and continent.

Thanks Dave for your valuable input. About the softening and cropping, I will try that. I am sure, it will give a better look to the picture .

Yes, for street and candid moment capturing, nothing is our hand, so it becomes a bit challenging for the photographer .
