Frosty morning.

I am becoming more and more enamoured of these long exposures before sunrise. This was a minute and thirty seconds (by my count) actually 88 seconds by the camera count so the one one thousand, two one thousand count was quite close. I am startled by the amount of information I can extract. Using this I can emulate HDR with none of the weirdness. Quite a bit of post processing change, but really mainly increased the exposure, increased the warmth then darkened the sky to get here

I suspect it must have something to do with the diffuse light off the snow, or previously in fog. Certainly has never seemed to work well before the snow arrived. Someone with more brains than may be able to explain if this is true or I am deluded

The thing that throws me a curve ball with your picture is that the stalks in the foreground appear to be lit from the right side, yet the sun is coming up to the left, if I'm not mistaken.

Stunning image, Trevor! My guess is that you wouldn't have been able to keep such a crisp look in the foreground with such a long exposure if the frost hadn't kept the stalks from blowing in the wind. Or is it that the stalks are stiff enough on their own?

The right side of the stalks are in shadow, indicating that the sunlight is indeed coming from the left.

Absolutely still morning so no wind at all. The hoarfrost is so fragile that I suspect even a mild wind would disrupt the formation on the stalks.

As for the light. Got me. This was an hour before sunrise and if there was any directional light it would be coming from just right of the image edge. At this time of year the sunrise is about 45 degrees East of South. Back scatter off the clouds on the west horizon?

I love this shot, Trevor. The pastel colors of cold, northern morning simply don't occur at lower latitudes. At least not in my experience. I've been similarly amazed at how much detail and color can be pulled out with long exposures in low light. Really nicely done.

That's very, very nice and oddly welcome since we are experiencing unseasonably warm, and very wet weather at the moment. I could do with a bit of "deep and crisp and even" at the moment - well perhaps not the "deep"

We are indeed (I'm just a couple of hundred miles up the road from John). I read somewhere that this is looking like it might be the warmest December on record. I just wish it would stop raining. I'm running out of towels to dry the dog.

A really beautiful image. Apart from the lighting and colors, which are striking, the composition works very well--the position of the barn, the lines, and the amount of detail provided by the stalks in the foreground. Very nicely done.
