    Nikon - D500 and D5 announced

Well then - they have been busy little bee's haven't they:

Just typical that two months after I dump all my Nikon gear they make a replacement for my ageing D300s - still I have grown to love the tiny form factor of my X-T1 so I won't weep......much. Nice camera the D500 with some proper solid specs.

The D5 is a good evolution - mind you I had a double take when I saw the ISO can be pushed to OVER 3 million!

Nikon also announced its first speedlight that transmits data using a radio frequency rather than an infrared beam of light. The advantage is that the speedlight does not have to be in the line of sight of the transmitter.

They also announced a wearable underwater camera that photographs 360 degrees in 4K.

Robin - You would probably not like the size of the D500. It is larger than the D300s and the D7200. It is also larger in every dimension and heavier than the D750. It is the same width as the D810, .3" shorter and .1" thinner. So folks won't be buying it for its compact size.

I quite like the specs of the D500 (it would suit me) - but since I haven't really used the D7100 for several months, I can hardly justify the expense.

I like what I see with the D500. I like my D7100 but would like better performance at higher ISO's, and all my lenses right now are DX.

Yes, that's a plus for me, as is the tilting LCD, which I sorely miss (on my D7100) from my D5000

Plus the LCD is touch screen, which could also save time.

Another other big plus (if true), is the buffer and fps increases (handy for wildlife) at 200 RAW and 10 fps with AF.

Talking of which, supposedly even better AF

No built-in flash, which I have used occasionally, but can't have everything, eh?
Just have to learn to use a big flash.
    Get Wi-Fi/Bluetooth instead.
No GPS built-in either, but I'm not bothered by that.

Oh dear .... I feel myself weakening, even the price seems - how shall I say; not unreasonable.

    Repeat after me:

D500 looks great for me. Great features, size, and performance. That 16-80mm lens looks great too! Much better than the standard 18-55, and would probably stay on my body more than the 18-200 for travel stuff.

Now hopefully I can hit this lottery tonight!

Personally, Dave, I think a moderator extaordinair like yourself DESERVES a new camera. I say go for it. You can further justify it by posting a thorough review of it on CIC. You know, learning forum and all that

Actually, I feel so strongly about this that I would be willing to pay twice the current CIC membership fee so management could afford to fund it for you

Just remember some of us are on pensions and doubling the membership fee will mean we will not be able to afford necessities like a D5.

Maybe wait a bit Dave and see how it appears in the cold light of ...

From what I've seen so far I am not rushing to dump the D7100 for it. The buffer and fps increases would be welcome, but no flash is not good for me, as I use the built-in unit in Command mode to remotely fire off-body units. It's also not clear exactly what benefits come from the increased focus and there may be limitations on how many are active. It does have 2 card slots but you can only have 1 SD card, the other has to be XQD.

I'd chip in 3 times the annual CIC subscription if you want to move to a D750

    Regards

    Bill

What the heck--I'm all in. I'll up my dues to 4x if you buy a Canon 7DII. If you don't like it, I'll pay shipping to here.

It looks to me like a fantastic camera. I have not been too happy with the noise performance of my D7100 so have looked at full frame. It might not be necessary for me to ditch my dx glass.

Excuse me, but is this hype? Or is it so much better than any current camera?

I went through this in the old days of 35mm film. Just stayed true to fujifilm in those days 😀

There you go then. The grass was always greener with Velvia... It was my favorite film for lush green bush scenes and landscapes.

So does anyone think these cameras are so earth shattering they are worth the hype?
