    ....Fun with flags...

    Oh no wait,

I mean fun with SOOC jpegs

Another installment of my DESPERATELY UNPOPULAR Series....

Yeah it's a bit dark, but check out the detail and contrast, go Fuji!

I always advise RAW shooters to turn off DR expansion modes, they bump up ISO, introduce noise and smear detail. But for the jpeg shooters, they're not so bad, no?

Ok I'll spare you any more!

Now some of you might wonder why I do this 'fun with SOOC' crap? Where's the fun in sub par images?

Well raw and post process is great, it really is

pushing 2-4 EV on a modern ISOless sensor, whacking the clarity and detail slider right up... whoop there it is, that's the shot

But IMO (YMMV) I like to keep my hand in... I cut erm blunted my teeth on film and sometimes, when it doesn't really matter, I like to go out and see what I can actually get out of the camera and not the PC...

...gives me less work to do in post and keeps my ability (I use the word loosely) to work with natural light in touch

Fuji is a good camera. A good camera with better than average skills = nice shots

How did I miss the first post?
I'm all about SOOC jpegs too, well, for the most part. I try not to do much PP on any of my pictures.

Yeah, yeah, I know, it shows too.

    Hi Griddi,

    Thanks very much

Well if you mainly use the RAW files, then turn it off, but if you mainly use the jpegs leave it on!

The XT1 will only ever select DR200 if it's left on auto mode (the earlier Fujis will select DR400 on auto) so DR200 is 'only' a lose of a stop, so there won't be that much in it..

OK, I do not understand what DR means but skip that as I am Nikon shooter. I like that #1 one here...and also your article about shooting in RAW in your blog.

    Hi Adam,

Yes, I have the XT1 DR set on auto mode.....although I use mainly RAW files, but as you wrote this will be fine then with RAW and JPEG....no worries then ....thank you !!!!!!!

    Hi Griddi,

If you mainly use the RAW files then personally I'd leave DR set to DR100 (ie off)

I think I've done 3 posts with SOOC now... (Think)

SOOC is great, if you a)nail in the exposure in camera and b)aren't exposing for a scene that will overwhelm a 8 bit jpeg

    For everything else there's raw!

Flippancy aside... SOOC are actually a lot more work than RAW, my Fujis offer (something like) 5 settings each for highlight tone, shadow tone, saturation, NR and sharpness. Plus 2 dynamic range settings (3 incl. off!) and 10 or 11 (actually maybe 12) different jpeg film simulations!

Screw going through that lot in between every single shot to try and decide what the best one is!

Much easier to do it later, most cameras have a built in raw convertor these days, so even if someone is a die hard jpeg shooter, then they should shoot jpeg and raw even if 'only' to review and change their jpeg choices after the shoot!

Here's a SOOC shot I took about a year ago when I was just fooling around with my cameras.
I know it's not much of a subject but I like the result I was able to achieve. You can't see the lines that show in the computer lid, which I've used as a table top here, when looking at it directly.
