Thanks Mike, good idea about the pole. Will do.

If you are keen on Art Deco in particular I would recommend a trip across the Tasman to Napier NZ. The city was hit by an earthquake and subsequent fire that totally destroyed the downtown area. It was all rebuilt in the 1930's and is arguably the best example in the world of a predominantly art deco environment. It is, because of this, a world heritage site.

While the city has expanded, the planning requirements still demand that new building in the area have to be finished in the Art Deco style. Every February they hold an Art Deco weekend where many people hire suitable attire and visitors come from far and wide with period cars.

The area also has great wineries, and the weather is generally nice and warm. I hope this helps.
I grew up in Hastings, just 16km from Napier, so it's nice to see it mentioned here. I'll be there in July, and will take the opportunity to photograph the art deco. Photography is a relatively recent hobby and so it'll be the first time I really study the place.

There are certainly a lot of wineries there now. When I was a kid they were mostly sheep farms!

I particularly like the last two photos, although as Shane says, it'd be nice to find a viewpoint that avoids the worst effects of the traffic lights. Still, good work and thanks for posting the photos.

This is an old photo with a very early digital camera a Canon G1 no less!, so not such good quality, but I hope it will give you reason to give a trip a go.

Inside a bank the décor reflects a melding of Art Deco and Maori cultures.

Dave...did you google Architectural Art Deco buildings, Brisbane first before you walk out of your door? There seems to be a lot over there your way...

Anyway, that being said, I kinda like #3 first which really neat then the Waterloo Hotel best followed by the Coronet Flats. the last one is more simple looking...Love the colours too. Coronet Flats looks too sharp in the bricks for me.

    Thanks for commenting Izzie.

I didn't google it before I went out but did so afterwards. More possibilities to follow up!

I used minimal sharpening on all images, including the Coronet Flats. I must just be a "sharp shooter" . Seriously though I was using a FF with a 50mm prime so I would expect pretty sharp results.
