A bit of catchlight to the eyes would have been helpful. I like #1 better.

Guess I'll be the dissenting opinion here. If the eyes are to be the main subject of the photo, then they need to be, at minimum, unobstructed. In the first two images here the angle is such that the eye lashes are obstructing the eye. It looks like the horse is half asleep. Typically eye contact with the camera shows better, preferably with some reflected light(aka catch light). If shot at an angle then the need to be much larger in the frame. Whereas in the last shot there is clear eye contact and the animal looks alert, interested, and personality is coming through in the photo.

+1 to the comments from both Izzie and Dan's comments.

In photography, eyes come to life with light reflecting of the moist surfaces of the eye. In humans, this is relatively easy to do because because we can either use artificial means to do this (flash, reflectors or positioning them in such a way that we catch natural light). With a horse, I suspect flash and some of these techniques are going to spook the animal and cannot be used.

I'm sorry, but these images are not working for me as the eyes appear dead and lifeless. If these shots are about the eyes, they need to sparkle, i.e. you need appropriately positioned and sized catchlights in them.
