    End of the line......

End of the line.........this shot was taken in a disused train station in Haydarpasa, Istanbul. I discovered the old trains walking back to my ship, I had tried a few hand held shots the day before but wasn't happy, so I went bought a travel tripod to do some long exposure shots. The photo is a combination of learning long exposure and PS layers, following tutorials step by step. All advice and c&c most welcome.

Looks OK to me. There is a bit of strong shadow in the bottom right corner but I don't find it to be a serious problem and it would have been difficult to do anything else at the time of shooting or with later editing.

Something strange about this shot, Greg. The buoy's strong shadow suggests that there is a lot of light behind you, yet the image looks underexposed and rather flat (no whites at all just gray values (the brightest substantive amount of gray is ~ 140). It looks like there are street light (or reflectors) on at the left side of the image.

I assume that this is close to sunset and it's getting dark / stormy in front of you?

Manfred, the sun had indeed set, behind me were large floodlights for a gas terminal with a gatehouse to the left of the shot. This was a shot from about 30 minutes before sun went down

Color version has more depth. Nicely captured.

Hi Gerry, I like both versions. IMO the B&W image can be improved more with some more PP

You lost quite a bit converting this shot to B/W...I prefer the colour version best.

    Re: End of the line......

Thanks for all the comments, honestly I think I lost my way doing the conversion, so I went back and shot it again tonight. All comments very welcome. Thank you. I appologise for uploading via attachment, it is all that will work as connection very poor onboard ship.

I much prefer the last image to the others Gerry. Nothing to do with whether it is mono or colour. More because I prefer the composition which shows more of the carriages and the associated dilapidation.

+1 to JOhn, too. This is a much better composition. In the previous image the carriages were competing with the building on the right and the brightly lit area in b/g left.

    Re: End of the line......

The second attempt is far superior as it omits the buildings which could be subject on their own.

But more than that, the impression of the carriage leaning to the right is also avoided.

As the verticals appear to be ok, maybe the vehicle is damaged, the track has a 'cant' to it or the angle of the shot makes it feel as if it is leaning?

In the first pair, I like black & white one. I see the sunlight streaks diagonally falling, up to the walls on the right side. Yet how such strong shadow? such a bright light source is not illuminating the back of the train too....

The new image is simply awesome both with respect to composition and wonderful colors....
