    Re: Rocks at sunset

Hi, Binnur. Nice effect on the water and very colorful. IMO this is not your best work. Overall there isn't enough of any one element. The sky isn't interesting enough to warrant the space that it occupies therefore the centered horizon doesn't work. You still get the color reflected on the water so IMO should have used more of the frame to emphasize the interesting rocks in the FG. Placing the horizon at top 1/3 line and getting much closer to the rocks may have been a better option. But landscape isn't my strong suit so I may be way off

Nice tones and composition pulls the gaze towards the horizon.

Hi Dan. Actually there were more rocks in the FG and I cropped them and put the horizon to the centre. But I have just tried your suggestion with the PSD file and it doesn't look bad at all. so I will upload a version in half an hour. Please follow my thread to give your opinion

    Re: Rocks at sunset

I'm uploading another version considering Dan's suggestion. I actually cropped the image from the bottom in the original because the rocks weren't very interesting as Dan already mentioned. But IMO having all of them in the frame and putting the horizon to the 1/3 gives the feeling of being in the scene. So, I think I like this second version better. I also cropped the image from the LHS a bit to put the sun into the middle, I think it works better this way. I would like to know your opinions

BTW this is the least interesting composition of my sunset images in the same location. After my two already uploaded sunset images before this one, this is certainly stay behind them in ranking. May be that's why I edited it lately

I liked #2 more, probably because of a rich foreground; since there is no other POI, I just wanted to walk on those rocks more...in sunrise/set images, it is not much necessary to have another POI; if something comes -like a bird in flight- well and good

I do prefer the edit, Binnur. And yes your other shots from this location are superior. So this one is comparing nice to awesome...

Hi Nandakumar . I agree with you that #2 has the feeling of being in the scene. I too want to walk on the rocks when I look at it. Thanks for looking and commenting

Another awesome shot Binnur. I too prefer the second crop. The rocks do lead you to the setting sun!

I like the second version better - it just looks better to me. I think this would print out well on metalic paper. Well done, Binnur.

I like your handling of the sun in the second capture.

Binnur - Dan hit the points I would have made so I didn't say anything about the first post. The second is a much stronger composition. I especially like the way that the rocks now leads the viewer's eyes into the image.

    Re: Rocks at sunset

I'll be the odd one out. I am drawn to the light. The colours in the sky and sun's reflection are what hold my interest in this image. I would have cropped more off the bottom of the first version to bring the horizon down to the lower third.

    Re: Rocks at sunset

Thanks for the further comments, I'm glad that you are happy with the second version .I'm happy with it too

Greg I never thought a frame like you mentioned before I read your comment. Because when shooting, I concentrated on showing the curve the rocks created. But because you suggested such a thing I tried the crop to see how it worked and it didn't work fine because the bulk of the rocks in both sides of the frame became a distraction. I have seen some very beautiful sunset shots on Flickr which were cropped in the way you mentioned , I think I have to find the suitable place for the correct FG for such shots . Thank you very much for your suggestion

Very nice Binnur, well done. Is that wisely used magenta filter cast?

Thanks Robert As I explained in my other sunset shot, my ND filter gives a muddy looking brown-orange-pink color cast. So, I changed the WB to fix it and also added some photo filters in PS.

Depending of the situation I find cast sometimes helpful. Some of my filters are giving blueish cast at exposures longer than 4 minutes

Definitely the second one for the reasons already mentioned.

    That's also my context.
