Before or after the session
Looking through some of our past shoot sessions & I was reminded of a good tip.
That is tell them, just setting up now, not for real yet... etc for candid shots before any posing instruction & also keep shooting after you say you're finished for the same reason.
This one at the start of our last beach session is as good an example as any of this 'tip' in action, I think.

Thank you Dave, Matt & Donald, for your comments.
Dave, I cannot take the credit for the handy hint, I think I read it in Joe McNally's Coffee table book - 'the moment it clicks'
But I certainly have had it come in handy on numerous times.

Re: Before or after the session
Great shot and good practical photography lesson, Kay.
My variant of your technique is to tell them that I need to take some test shots to ensure that my settings are working and I'll play that game for a few minutes. Just make sure you take some "real" shots when you have finished with the test shots, or they'll figure out your ruse.
