This "old man" is the mac-daddy guru of Kite Boarding and at the eat prunes in the morning age still wins competitions all around the world, just recently in Costa Rica.
Now, this old geezer is an old geezer at age 74 and he can still kick up quite a show. He wears the helmet because of a head injury from a motorcycle accident.
