Another sunset that shamelessly uses colour to pander to the masses

I was all set to go home as the sunset seemed to be fading. There must have been a cloudbank over the horizon blocking the sun because suddenly the light and colour changed.

The muskrat in the foreground seemed to enjoy it as well. They usually swim quickly when in open water. This one stopped for about three seconds

I'm just waiting for someone to recommend converting it to black-and-white.

The title was derived from a slow smoulder going on inside me for the past week. I have four images in the local Art Society Show; three in black and white and one in colour. The show has all the works by one artist shown as a group this year rather than scattered through the show at random. I happened to be there at noon and there was an elderly man (well older than me) standing with four other people in front of my images. I think he was was a tourist passing through. He was holding forth to his comrades. Do the next bit in a pedantic, slow, nasal voice. " How very unfortunate that the photographer elected to submit this colour image. Destroys the continuity of the work. And colour; well, the truly great photographers work in monochrome as it removes the tawdry, pandering appeal of colour and shows true artistic talent". What to do? Luckily I was at the gallery to see the fellow who prints my images and is a fellow photographer. We beat him to death with a stone sculpture from the next artist's display and chucked his body in a dumpster. The police said we should not have done that, next time call them and they will shoot him.

I suppose he is entitled to his opinion. As am I. But this too polite a forum to elaborate on my opinion.

Trevor, once you retire you can begin your career as a writer of hilarious reminiscences about your life!

That's a great capture, Trevor. It is so often after sunset that the magic happens. Love the narrative about the body in the dumpster too. Great post!

Best to avoid attending such gatherings to overhear such ramblings; photo club judges can sometimes be similarly demeaning.

If you sell any of your pictures, just take the money and run.

No matter how good your four photographs are that are being shown, they can't possibly live up to the quality of your story telling.

I have to agree with Mike. I think the quality of both the photo AND the story are top notch. Maybe you could do both photos with the very descriptive, funny story behind them. I don't even know you but I would enjoy reading it. I love wordsmiths.

Just again reading through your post that explains where the title came from. You quote the elderly gentleman thus:- "And colour; well, the truly great photographers work in monochrome as it removes the tawdry, pandering appeal of colour and shows true artistic talent".

    What a wise man!

which raises a serious question. If I was to switch to monochrome for my macro could the needed new skills enhance my shooting?

My experience is that any time I master new photography skills, doing so impacts other aspects of my photography at least to some degree. Even when the results of that impact are not noticeable to others, the impact is always enough to increase my enjoyment of the hobby. That's because the process is every bit as important to me as the results.

As an example, the skills I have learned that on the surface would seemingly apply only to photography done in my makeshift studio also apply at least to some degree to all other aspects of my photography. I think that overflow is because regardless of the type of photography we do, we are always dealing with some combination of light and texture, shape, color and/or action.

It can change the way you look at things. With the absence of color you depend more on texture, contrast and tonality.
