Ontario: Sunflowers I & II

Last Sunday afternoon, I went to a "Sunflower Festival" at the farm of a grower. The conditions for photographing sunflowers were most challenging for me; bright sunshine, white puffy clouds that refused to cover the sun, sunflower heads that pointed east and the sun hanging high to the southwest. To make matters worst, I left my circular polarizer at home!

Last Sunday was also the day that Mike posted his Provence: Sunflowers I & II. It has taken me all week to convince myself to post these for C & C.

Nice compositions, Andre, hampered as you mention by light that was less than flattering. Even so, photos like these make for great memories and to try again in better light. Consider using a square format on the second one.

As for forgetting the polarizer, I keep my polarizers in a small pouch that is never removed from the outside of my camera bag. It works like a charm.

I had tried a squarish crop like this

but it did not look right to me. I think that it is either because the flower is not symmetrical or the break in the background vegetation is in the middle of the flower. I had as second look following your suggestion and found this crop that appeals to me.

The lower right bloom and the main flower seem to form a diagonal that adds dynamism to the shot which is enhanced by the bright bloom mid height on the left side. Thank for suggesting the second look. I have learned something valuable today.

Your last crop is the most appealing to me because of the nice balance between clouds on the right and trees on the left and because of the attention given to the subject's leaves.
