    Pittenweem harbour; C&C welcome

We had a short break near here last week, and the first full day brought what I wanted photographically - a nice haar rolling in from the North Sea (the rest of the family didn't quite see it that way though).

    Here's one of the shots:

    Pittenweem harbour; C&C welcome

Next day was bright and clear and I went back for some early morning shots, from just before the sun broke the horizon to about an hour later.

The first is of a small fishing boat, where the reflections in the water are appropriate to the name of the vessel:

    Pittenweem harbour; C&C welcome

    and finally one of the breakwater catching the light of the sun which has just broken the horizon;

    Pittenweem harbour; C&C welcome

Lovely composition and light in #3 Bill I will crop the bluish sky at the top to give the composition some more energy.

Thanks Binnur - that's a good suggestion! I wondered about cloning out the red life belt that's hanging on the wall too, but decided to leave it as it is an integral element in the scene.

Excellent set of images, Bill. All nicely composed and well executed. Collectively the set give a good sense of the place. Well done.

You might desaturate the red life belt just a little bit if you want The light looks so good in the image that the life belt doesn't distract me at first sight.

Nice captures, hope you didn't smile too much during the rolling haar?

Bill, I like all three photos but my favourite is probably the first. I live near the coast and took a photo many years ago of a local coastal area with a bit of fog that had rolled in. These are not the easiest photos to take successfully. Yours has turned out well.

I love the mood and composition of the first. Also the color, lines and composition of the last. Very, very well done!

Thanks Bruce and Mike. I asked for C&C but was a little surprised by the early unanimity of the third, as the first is my personal favourite for exactly the reasons that you mention - the mood and the challenge of capturing the fog but still having something worthwhile visible.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that viewing the first and third images as prints would make more people more partial to the first one. That's because a print can bring out the attributes of the first one whereas a computer monitor can bring out the attributes of the third one.

I would try cropping a bit of the foreground in the last shot, to move the horizon from the center of the image, to focus on the lighthouse as the focal point of the image.

This is a nice set of images. I spent the past two weeks on the island of Newfoundland, the very easternmost part of Canada and saw numerous fishing villages, boats and lighthouses. I felt a real sense of history and get very much the same feeling when I look at your images.

I like the first image best because the fog or mist gives an impression of distance. If this were my image, I might consider a closer drop at image right, eliminating the concrete pier and at the top eliminating some of the bright sky.

Thanks Richard. I can see what you mean, and indeed spent some time considering it earlier, but left it the way posted to add a little to the "harbour" - it is low tide - and the haar - the grey sky top right. However, having received your feedback I'll crop along the lines you suggest and do a side-by-side.
