cocoon 7: Stagecoach asked for an F/18 day

No pressure (yeah right!), but I hope you manage to be there when it emerges.
(but I appreciate you can't be watching all day, everyday and we may miss it)

I have a question; (mostly) on the top third, are those little holes (to let air in?) that I can see where the dark line comes down it (towards the right hand side)? There is one per 'segment', I count 6-7 in total.

If you know about when it comes out, you could try a time laps. The camera on a tripod, and shoot every few second a shot. Then merge them as a video. Probably the software is in your camera.

F/18 is where my gear starts to noticeably lose IQ.

I would say this is equal, if not a better shot (and I'm not referring to the increased DoF) than those at f/14 and f/16.

It's just so embarrassing. This is a "Chrysalis" not a cocoon. The football shapes are called "spiracles" and in three out of four life cycle stages are used for breathing. Who knew? Thanks for asking.

This was a pleasant surprise for me. I also cut the fill flash down and upped the shutter speed. F/18 does have potential.

I noted your settings

Another couple of things to consider;

If this emerges at a night (in the dark) are you confident you know how to deal with it, settings and lighting?

Are you going to try it at f/22?

P.S. I also see that this one although really good has scope to improve even more with PP, but that may be down to personal taste

if it emerges at night I'll probably be asleep. But If I'm not then flashlight and camera flash.
I wasn't going to try 18 so the weather permitting I'll give 22 a try.
I sure hope I've not perfected my pp skills quite yet
