    Haida Gwaii Shipwreck--

I continue to work on increasing my understanding of Photoshop post processing. This is an old slide from 1998 which I scanned and remastered. I am currently exploring blending modes. For this shot I used the Lighten blending mode with the paintbrush to get localized changes in the boat.

    oops!

I have corrected the links. Thanks for looking and for pointing out the problem. The differences are subtle but they really can be seen!

    Week 41--Agrarian UFOs.

Driving through the Canadian agricultural lands I kept seeing rows of silos. It seemed to me they might have a connection with crop circles so I used the post processing skills I have been working on to give them that look.

The first image looks a bit shabby even after edit, but believe me that only adds up to the subject; i really liked the output.
In the second case i feel the original is far better than your edit....to be frank, i even wonder why you edited it that way
    Regards

Thanks for comments. I knew the edit on week 41 would be controversial. But since my goal for the year in the 52 week challenge is to explore Photoshop I wondered if I could make these silos look as otherworldly as they seemed to me when they appeared again and again around the bend and over the hill as we drove eastward. Did I achieve that even if you didn't like the concept?

    Sorta.

    Two, no, three thoughts struck me viewing these;

    a) Two things detract for me:
    1) I'd like the silos to be silver, not blue (even though they are probably just reflecting the blue sky) it just looks like an incorrect WB because it's all so uniform
    2) It's a shame the 'splash' on the car window lost you an area of detail on silo 4 and you didn't fix that by cloning*

    b) If I were to take the "otherworldly" theme (to excess?) from the source image, I would have tried to clone out the obvious human scale content, namely; two silos have ladders, which I'd have cloned out, just leaving the basic shapes

    * you did say you wanted a PP challenge this year

That said, letting my imagination run away with me, I could justify the blue cast as taking this as the view seen by an alien through their eyes.

    HTH, Dave

Thanks for helpful comments. Clearly this image moves to illustration which is not something this site normally gets into.

week 42--Hardin in Black and White

I posted this as a color photo in week 32 and someone on another site challenged me to try it in B & W. I have not done much with B & W conversions, but since my year-long focus is to learn more about post processing I thought it was high time to give it a try. All C & C is most welcome and will help me grow.

    As posted in week 32

    Hi Judith,

Even though there are angles within the image, somehow the façade of the building looks flat. I think it worked in the color version simply because there was color; but in the B & W version there is just too much surface area to not have some area of interest for the eye.

thanks--I was thinking more about the conversion and lost track of the aesthetics!

To my eye the B&W conversion has lost the texture of the brick.

    Week 43--Crystal Crescent, Nova Scotia

In my exploration of Photoshop I have been looking at ways to enhance photos of water. Early on I posted some photos of waterfalls in Oregon. This week I am focused on the curl of a wave at the beach in Nova Scotia. The day was bland skies so the photos were pretty flat. I found that with localized application of the clarity tool on the face of the wave, and a few other minor adjustments, I could recapture what interested me at the time.

Joe, based on your good comment I tried using clarity on the building to increase contrast in the midtones in an effort to increase texture. Interested in your reaction. Don't know that b & w conversion is in my aesthetic but it is in my range of personal challenges!

    Hi Judith,

The wave PP works for me too.

I also prefer the revised mono of "Hotel Becker" - although I just noticed a slither of white triangle in lower left corner that could be cloned over. This is in both mono versions, probably the side effect of the perspective work you did on 16th.
