    Chester Cathedral Windows

At my daughter's Ph.D award in Chester Cathedral, I thought that I would have an opportunity to photograph some of the windows. Such opportunities were limited. On the outward procession, I was facing the Great West Window, but I had to make do with my Canon Powershot to take photographs on the hoof. As we exited from the chancel to the west door, I also had a chance to photograph the South Windows to my left.

The lighting was from the clear sky outside, the sun was to the south-east. This means that the Great window was fairly evenly illuminated, as were four out of the five south windows. Only the second was noticeably darker to the left-hand side, and I adjusted this with a layer mask. This was my first effort at using such a gradient mask! Other post-processing was transforming to orthogonal and some sharpening.

Comment and Criticism welcome, especially given the circumstances in taking them. The cathedral was occupied most of the rest of the time we were in Chester by other degree ceremonies!

That's a very nice set of images under any circumstances John, but with a point and shoot, these are particularly good.

Thanks, but our daughter paid for it all herself! She started part-time, then took voluntary redundancy and completed it along with some teaching work. She is now permanently employed at the university.

All nicely exposed and so much detail to look at. Very interesting.shots..especially the family event outing to capture these. Your daughter is a very industrious person and will be able to take her ups and downs in life with a grain of salt having been able to go through this first part of her life and be successful in it. You and your wife must be very proud of her. I know I would if she is my child.

Thanks Izzie. I should add that she was a mature student, in her forties!

These are beautiful, John, and a motivation and encouragement to try with the many churches in San Antonio.

The more that you should be proud of her for persevering through despite her age...She is still young compared to us and can do anything she puts her heart into if she wants to.
