I am officially a convert

I have switched gear. I am now a Nikon user - and a Mac user.

I shot an event with my D750, 24-70 2.8 and SB5000 over the weekend, and I am more than pleased. None of these pictures have been sharpened. I used Capture one to lift shadows and in most cases, reduce the exposure.

Here are some samples. Please tell me what you think.

Those are great images and show how the camera gear supports your skill level. I am sincerely glad that you enjoy using your gear - both Nikon and Mac, but that said I have a great deal of difficulty with the onerous debate about what is the best hardware. Frankly I think that ALL of the major manufacturers make great gear - otherwise they would have no market. As Ansell Adams said:
“The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it!”

I have used Canon, Nikon and Olympus gear and they were ALL able to produce great results - depending upon how I handled them and the purposes to which I put them.

No doubt both sides make great gear, but I had struggled with the "crispness" of my Canon 7d (despite sending it in for cleaning and repair) to the point where I really did not want to take pictures any more. I have seen some lovely results from Nikon and Canon users, but since I had to opportunity, I replaced my gear, and my aging Dell as well. I already own an iPhone and iPad, so the addition of the Mac makes it all seamless.

Hi Marie:

That's interesting... I have the 7D myself and found that its ability to render a sharp image varied vastly with the lenses I used on it. Without doubt it was one of Canon's less successful bodies, as the MkII has demonstrated. That said, even though I use other bodies I still use it with specific lenses with success. I can completely understand your enthusiasm for a system that rendered the results you wanted, and my comment was not so much aimed at your conversion but the follow-up response.

My friend, who has been a Mac user for some time has finally broken from them with great reluctance when the newest MacBook Pro came out at an outrageous price. I still stick to Windows as it runs some apps that are specific to that platform and I prefer the file management of Windows, but I can certainly see the attraction in the graphical abilities of the platform. I hope you have many years of successful use from both systems.

I think having confidence in your gear, and enjoying using it, is really important no matter who you are or what you're photographing. From what I understand, the D750 is a great camera. I went the other way about six months ago and swapped my DSLR for micro four-thirds gear. My pictures have improved simply because I love using my cameras so much, and they go absolutely everywhere with me.

Great images... Congratulations on your new gear? It is frustrating when you cannot get the quality you should expect from your gear. What lens or lenses were you using with your Canon 7D. I have a pair of 7D's (one of which I will be selling) along with a 7D Mk2 and have not experienced a bit of trouble with any of the three cameras. I primarily use the 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200 mm f/4L IS with my crop cameras although for airshows and wildlife, I will use the 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens on my 7D2.

I notice that I am better off starting my PP by using NIK RAW Presharpener when I have shot with my 7D crop cameras but, am better off not using it when I shoot my rescue dogs with my 5D Mark-2. The images tend to look a bit over-sharpened when I use the RAW Presharpener on my full-frame images.

I have a new (about 4-months old) Dell desktop computer with 32 Gigs of RAM and a pair of hard drives (one of them an SSD) combined with a BENQ monitor that really improve my PP capability.

Nikon and Mac.....excellent choice! I can recommend both companies Pro level equipment, that I have used for a number of years.

It is however, you, that makes the picture and determines the decisive moment, so lets not get into the 'brand' debate.

I genuinely hope it produces the pictures that you are happy with. Having used that lens you have since it was first introduced by Nikon, I can certainly vouch for its quality. Most Nikon Pro lenses are on a par at that level, and you should not be disappointed.

How are you finding the SB5000, the first Nikon Speedlight to have its own radio trigger I recall?

Richard, I had all the right lenses- 24-105L, the 70-200 f2.8 L among others and a 50 1.4 prime. I found the noise to be difficult starting at 640 and above. I still swear the lack of sharpness was a problem in the body, but tests came back WNL.

My Dell is 5 years old, and while I had the forethought to load it with all the bells and whistles, certain elements were fast becoming obsolete as of now. As I said, since I have an iPhone and iPad, moving to a Mac made sense. I got the 27" Retina display. I opted for a Drobo 5d and 3 - 4Tb hard drives. Very fast.

Ian, you are right and I very carefully will not engage in a brand debate because there are proponents of both. CiC thankfully is not brand based, so I stand to take advantage of the broad base knowledge of photography from all camps, not just the knowledge of gear.

Hi, Mike. West Virginia has many small towns where all of the wires are above ground. Since it was part of the environment, I did not choose to heal them out, as it would have looked quite strange without them.

Hi Marie:

The following in no way is intended to undermine your decision, you have found your happy products and that is what counts. However your issue is not unique. I had heard that quite a few people had issues with the 7D Mk I. When I used mine I found (as I mentioned before) that some lenses behaved better with it than others. The ones that behaved the best were NOT necessarily the L lenses: those designed for full-frame bodies, but the EF-S lenses, i.e. those designed for a crop body. I read an article (that I shall try to find) that explained the issues with trying to make a full-fame lens work well with a crop sensor.

Not satisfied with that I buttonholed a technical chap from Canon at a show I was attending and grilled him on the subject. His response was that EF-S lenses can be made cheaper but don't use inferior glass in many of the newer units. Thus those lenses should offer a better result for a crop sensor unit that some of the older L series lenses. I personally found that the 18-135 STM lens was very sharp when used with the 7D MkI.

Flipping across to the DXo website (https://www.dxomark.com/) that tests lenses against specific body types and you get to see the numbers that show that the performance of each lens can vary quite a bit with the body it is connected to. The venerable 24-105L for example did not come out as well as I had hoped, perhaps why there is now a new version released about now.
