My thoughts too. It is very difficult to get a shot of these stones that puts your own stamp on it. They've been photographed from every conceivable angle and are the subject of thousands of pictures every year. But this is an excellent image. Not only is the composition exciting and dynamic, but the lighting on the stones with the wild sky behind it add to the drama of the image and just the right amount of detail has been brought out in the stones. Well done, Andy. That's a beauty.

I agree with Donald comment, I just would like to have a bit of warm sunshine, but it maybe not the case when you took the picture but I am an incorrigible image maker instead of being a simple photographer

Such a thing on the Island of Lewis is quite a rarity!!

Remember, this is right on the north-western fringes of Europe. Go north from here and the next stop is the Arctic Circle.

Wonderful image. I am transported back to the original inhabitants who struggled to erect these stones (as offerings to their Gods?)

That's the wonderful mystery, Richard. Nobody can be certain. A religious place? A scientific site for studying the sun, moon and stars? There are many proposals put forward, but no conclusive answers.

Very nice indeed kernowbhoy, it's a long way from Cornwall to Lewis, so good on you ! I lived on the Isle of Skye until 10 yrs old, then remained in Scotland until 21 yrs old (since in NZ). I never got up to the Orkney's or Shetland, so it is nice to see images from those areas. :-)

What a beautiful installation.....They are so attractive due to the bare lands around...is the popular stonehenges place distant from this place?

Stonehenge is over 500 miles from Callanish. That is another wonderful part of the mystery. Callanish, Brodgar and Stenness on Orkney and Stonehenge were each built about 5000 years ago. What travelling was taking place between these communities at that time? Were they all part of one society? Did each know what the other was doing?

Wonderful images, I particularly like the stone textures brought out in the first one.
