Nice photo, Mark. It is hard to put into words what I might try if the photo was mine. But here goes. When I say a "rock width" I am referring to the width of the rock on the left hand side of the formation. So .. I would crop out the left hand side side of the photo to within one "rock width" of the left hand rock and I would crop out the right hand side of the photo to within one "rock width" of the right hand rock. These cropped areas really don't add anything to the photo and so can be removed. I would then crop up from the bottom to remove the small rock in the foreground. They say three rocks are usually better than four in photography. If you now apply the "Rule of Thirds" you will find the horizon lies on top line of the rule of thirds and the reflection of the sun lies on the right hand vertical line of the rule of thirds. I believe this is a much better composition to what is all ready a really nice photo

Nope I personally would disagree that the cropped areas dont add anything - in cropping them off it looses the breadth of the image for me and constrains it too much, not over bothered by 'rules of third' the sun and suntrack were in the righ area ish - thats okay with me.

I like the feel the open version gives to me of standing there on the open beach (I have the luxury of knowing how it actually looked to me) rather than the narrow feel the crop gives me. But what I do love is that it works as a crop at a level that if it was not mine and I had not seen the wider version I would compliment and so its always a personal thing, in every image there are a thousand other images, one for everyone

Yes that is what is what I was thinking. As you say, photography is a personal thing and always open to many interpretations. Either way, it is a great photo. Well done

I prefer the wider original version too Mark. But removing the bottom rock seems to have worked fine in the cropped version. So may be you can do the same in the original . If the image was mine I would try cloning the bottom rock in the original (if it wasn't too difficult) instead of cropping
