Flying across the face of Half Dome to Cathedral Peak, Yosemite

During my photographic trip to Yosemite I was always mindful of making images of scenes that were a bit different. That were about seeing the place from a different perspective. That's when something like the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens comes in useful. This photograph was captured at 400mm on a crop sensor body. Who said you had to have wide angle lenses for landscape work?

Any thoughts or comments you wish to share will be welcomed.

Wonderful framing, we feel very close to the right wall and we have a good perspective.
In addition, as usual, very very good PP in B&W.
1/30 at 400 mm, not hand held?

Indeed. NOT hand held .... and using a cable release with the camera set to mirror lock-up. So everything was done to minimise movement.

What struck me is the lack of a decent black Donald,

Knowing you, you made a conscious decision on the tonal range, so I wonder what that was?

I accept that as the nearest point is some distance off, there should be some atmospheric haze, but if mine, I'd have been tempted to get a few pixels down to black as part of the contrast or micro contrast on the extreme right (since that's nearest us).

    Just my musings, Dave

I have been totally indulged and have seen more of your Yosemite shots than most...for which I thank you on a deep and personal level.

This is one I haven't seen and is very different in the way it fills the frame. I like the difference ...but I'd like to see some blacks too.

Even if only to show me you were correct not to go that route.

I personally prefer #1 as there is more detail in the rock face.

That's way more heavy handed than I was imagining.

First one for me Donald and very nice it is. Too much detail lost on the R H S in the second.

It was always my intention not to affect the shadow side of the rock face, only the sunlit side (when I said "a few pixels", I wasn't joking) - so ...

The original for side-by-side comparison in LyteBox:
Flying across the face of Half Dome to Cathedral Peak, Yosemite

I tried it two ways, using Gradient tool in ACR:

Clarity +20 and Blacks -20 applied in same Gradient:
Flying across the face of Half Dome to Cathedral Peak, Yosemite

Dehaze +60 applied in a Gradient on RHS:
Flying across the face of Half Dome to Cathedral Peak, Yosemite

Screen grab of the Gradient location:

It may not be a hard black in either, but let's see what you think.

The difference is subtle and may not even be noticeable in some browsers and/or ambient screen lighting conditions.

When I was turning on and off layers in PS CC, I preferred the Clarity and Blacks version slightly, I remain of the same opinion now viewed in LyteBox.

Why does a black and white photo have to have 'decent black' in it?

To me, that's like saying a color photo has to have all the primary colors in it.

    What am I missing here?

I like the first version Donald, but the second is really pretty dramatic too IMO.

Donald, I prefer the first version. Having said that, the second version is a different picture altogether. The second version is 'dramatic' the first version is 'majestic.'

my favorite so far (referring to shot as originally posted) Nevertheless there is so much in this shot that I find all of the versions interesting.

Nicely framed, so much character in those rocks.
