    Wildlife at Wananaki

In the process of staying with friends at their camp ground in the rural north of NZ, we went out on a boat into the calm estuary that lay to the south of the peninsula on which we were camped. Now, allowing for the fact that I was in a moving 3m boat, hand held at 100m, with a bit of a breeze, I am amazed that these shots of Pied Stilts came out at all...

Hi Maurice - thank you for your kind comments. I was kept busy grabbing the sides of the dingy as be bounced around a fair bit. I was most concerned about not losing my camera over the side, or dropping it in the bilges, which were slowly filling with water as the bungs had shrunk!

A shrunk bung sounds like a painful medical problem.

Well done, Trev. Welcome to the wonderful world of shooting wildlife from a small boat. Ain't it great

I'd been after stilts for years. Finally caught up with some while down there. Crazy looking birds.

What were the bungs made of that they shrank? Sounds like your friend is old school. But if sol he'd have a pet monkey to keep shoving the bungs back in when they pop out

The bungs were rather old school... they were made of cork and wood, which had dried out after almost a year on the land! I suggested getting one of those plastic and rubber bottle stops that expend and contract when you turn a lever at the end...
