It's a creative composition that works much better for me in the Lytebox than in the size automatically displayed in the thread. Considering that the tower is the primary subject, I strongly recommend that you present it straight rather than tilted. Some people will no doubt recommend brightening everything except the sky, which might be a good idea depending on what you want the image to convey.

Sorry Mike, I should have explained that the tower has a tilt so I didn't straighten it. I was trying to convey a silhouette.
Mike, thanks for your comments, there are very much appreciated.

Nice shot Maurice, personally I would have lifted the shadows a bit on the tower.

Tough to see that in this kind of shot. Maybe a person standing next to it would have conveyed its lean better. Only a suggestion

If it is to remain a colour shot, then in my view the shadow areas do need brightening. Also, I find the diagonal foreground post on the right too strong an element and therefore a distraction - I would remove it.

    Cheers.

I would remove that diagonal foreground post which is creating a lot of distraction without adding anything.

Maybe consider a very slight crop from the bottom, but that isn't really important.

The second version works much better for me on all counts but one: I now have a dirty spot on my monitor that was not there when only the first photo was displayed.

Yes that looks better to me.

Ideally, the flag would be fluttering and stretched out, but I'm not seriously complaining about it being a calm day.

I would be the first to say I am not a very good photographer but to call my image a dirty spot is going far beyond fair criticism.
I have a lot to learn and I find your comments this time, very unhelpful.
    Thanks, Maurice.

    Re: The Tower

My replies have been a bit hit and miss this week. Santa brought me Man Flu on Christmas Eve (....all say AAAAH), so I missed this until yesterday. Version 2 is much better because you have lost some of the clutter and consequently brought the main subject, the Tower, to the fore. As a silhouette, my instinct is that alternatively, it is a mono subject rather than colour something like that below. I had started this before your version two. I have removed some of the clutter by cloning rather than cropping it but either way is equally valid. I just wanted to try it as a mono.

    Re: The Tower

    Maurice,

Please read my post again and notice, if nothing else, the emoticon. Notice also that the only complaint in my post has to do with my monitor, not your photograph. Most important, when you mention that I called your photo a dirty spot, you're just plain wrong; instead, I mentioned that I have a dirty spot on my monitor that was not there when I viewed your first photo. In fact, this holiday week has been busy enough for me that I still haven't cleaned that darned spot.

Maurice, for me your second version is a clear improvement on the original.

I agree, John, as perhaps might be implied by my comment in Post #6, "If it is to remain a colour shot,". I think the mono works quite well (but without the halo! ).

    Cheers.

John, I like what you did with the image, better then anything I managed. Glad you are on the mend.
    Thanks, Maurice.
