Nice photo, if it's mine I'd open up a tad the shadows to give more detail in the first bird.

That's a great capture. Action, poses, lighting, shutter speed and BG are all spot on.

Excellent, Chris. You handled the backlighting well. And awesome position on the birds with complimentary wing positions and both tails fanned. The huge tails are what earn them the nickname "water turkey". Goodness knows nothing else resembles a turkey. Really nicely done.

    Thanks Jean (everyone).
The shadows are opened up as far as they will go without creating a huge noise field. I pushed both the super and ultra darks luminosity masks to the limit then still had to paint back out some of the noise. This was shot late afternoon in a near setting sun at ISO 1600.

I agree with you about the noise on my version, but it was made from a compressed version of your file, I think you could achieve better results with your original and camera raw and/or Dfine in Nik suite.

Re: Off to the Anhinga Races

I used define high noise. Trust me, there is nothing left in the raw file that doesn't leave lots of noise. Also, keep in mind the jpeg compression turns dark's to real dark's and in Photoshop, it looks considerably better.
