I collect a series I made on the hands in a retirement house as I explained in my thread 2016-my ten best photos with the help of the elderly house staff
This resulted in an exhibition that had some success.

I present again those already presented for a more global aspect

It's interesting to me that the shadows are reasonably soft to very soft, as I would expect, except that the shadows in the first image are relatively hard. Those hard shadows work so nicely with the strong lines of the game's board and pieces.

Nice set, Jean. I particularly like #5 as I think you have nailed the composition in that image. The stick appears to be an extension of the hand and of similar age and texture.

In the last set of photos, which are very nice, I notice that you used the same setup. However, some of the photos display rather hard shadows and some display rather soft shadows. (The shadows in #6, #8 and #10 are relatively soft and the others are relatively hard). I prefer the softer ones and wonder why you chose the use of different qualities of shadows.

I've never used a soft box for this type of photography, so I wonder what the purpose of using a soft box is when the result isn't soft shadows. Is the difference between the quality of shadows explained by the difference in distance between the light sources and the subject?

These images are stunning.
It was masterly to have something in each photo that gives us a glimpse into the character of the person.
I have to assume that number 9 is holding on to someone else.

The different photos were taken on several sessions, resulting in differences in lighting, so the PP was not realized the same day.
Why I used umbrellas? because naked speed-light heads give too violent shadows. I preferred to restore character to the shadows in Silver Efex, sometimes well sometimes badly but I tried to strengthening more the hands of men.
I had not really time to adjust my lights between each participant and moved the light stands as much as possible, without control measures; old people don't like to wait and most of them didn't understand why they were there. most of them have Alzheimer disease.
