    Abstract made of dried vinaigrette

Now that I have a macro lens, I plan to be making abstract photos and this is my first one.

When I was making my photo of the avocado bathed in vinaigrette, the mixture dripped onto the tabletop made of green, textured art paper. I saw the possibilities for an abstract photo, so I cut that portion of the art paper away from the main sheet and set it aside for a week to dry.

    Setup
A small continuous-light lamp at the right at about a 45-degree angle rakes light across the scene to emphasize the texture. That lamp is also lighting a white wall behind the scene not included in the image. While wearing a salmon-colored long sleeve shirt, I held my arm immediately above the lens (easier than rigging up something to hold the fabric in place). The light reflecting off the white wall lit my sleeve, which in turn is reflected in the scene to create the rust tones. A polarizer eliminated the slight amount of glare that was present.

Very creative in seeing the possibilities for an abstract image. Its certainly different, in a good way.

Well seen, Mike. Shape, colour, texture - it has floral connotations, but might equally be interpreted as a close-up detail of an oil painting.

Lovely image, Mike. It amazes me how we can find great subjects in the most unexpected places.

    Thanks, everyone!

Very little abstract photography is displayed here at CiC, so maybe we can get some interest going in that direction. As an example, when I first began participating here several years ago there was very little monochrome photography being displayed (Donald being the primary source). Yet today it seems to be much more common.
