On the way home tonight...

Its been a bit of a bleak afternoon but as I was driving home along the coast I decided a quick stop for a long exposure shot of the pier might be a canny way to spend a half hour.

That would be a half hour of cold, grey, miserable light and lurking in a bus shelter with my 55-200mm slightly poking out as the wind was so strong I couldn't get a steady 30 second long exposure on the cliff tops - I swear I get funny looks everywhere I go...

This is a really cool image. The curved road, drawing the eyes to the somewhat fogged in lighthouse. Simple and beautiful. I really like it.

Both the piers at the river mouth are curved, as is the one on the River Tyne a little way up the coast from here. It never crossed my mind that they are unusual?

Thanks for this shot too, Robin, although quite frankly it is not nearly as nice as your first post...

If I were to take an educated guess, I'd have to say that the shape is primarily there to control the river water flow around the harbour entrance and reduce the silting there.
