Old lady and a puppy...

Invariable, we get requests from old ladies (really old in their mid to late 80's or even into the early 90's) to adopt puppies from our rescue. We do not consider a puppy as a good match for a elder person. Many of the puppies we receive as owner surrenders are from older ladies who simply cannot handle a lively puppy. Note, I am not being sexist here. It is mostly old ladies who only want a puppy

Our most recent owner surrender is Brandi, a sweet precocious, but lively, four and a half month old Maltese + pug mix.





Brandi was surrendered because she would chew on the tube from her 85-year old owner's oxygen supply

We will adopt an older, sedate dog to an elder person if (and only if) that person has a back-up who will care for the dog if the person can no longer care for it. This back-up is on the adoption form and signs that they are willing to care for the dog if the original adopted becomes incapacitated for some reason.

Just an informal, "Oh, my daughter will care for the dog if I can't!" doesn't cut it

People often don't realize that and older people often forget that their energy (and patience) is a lot lower than it was when they were young.

My wife is four years younger than I am. She often says that she gets tired a lot easier now than she did when she was younger.
I asked her if she had more energy four years ago and she said certainly. I told her that four years ago I was the same age as she is now

Bill and I thought our last dog will be Tucker (who moved on over to Rainbow's Bridge two years ago) but 6 years ago, my stepson came back to live with us and brought two dogs, a non-stop blue heeler and a corgi. We adopted Roxie, the blue heeler and now stuck with her. Nice dog, easy to train but we still worry about her even if my stepson and his girlfriend promised to take care of her when we get too old to care for her. Anyway, this shot is cool. A terrier.

Izzie, we were told that Brandi is a Yorkie mixed with some other terrier type. However, we had a litter from a Maltese female that was fathered by a pug that looked very much like Brandi...
This is the Malti-Pug puppy.

I think she looks quite a bit like Brandi...

They could easily be litter mates...

We think that Tucker (who is now named Duke) is a Goldendoodle. Duke is a darling boy and is very well trained and extremely happy in his home. My daughter and son-in-law are bringing Duke/Tucker over to our house on Sunday. I want to photograph him now that he is bigger (probably weighs about 20 pounds now)
I really want to get some shots of Duke and my Goldendoodle, Holly. They look like mother and son and are two really beautiful dogs...

This is our first puppy in a while. We got our Doberman as an adult. The breeder where we got our pup has a 17 year old Brittany Spaniel that is still doing well. I was thinking that if ours lives that long I will be 79 (provided I live that long). This will probably be my last puppy. Ouch.
