Maggie's, Dundee #2

I started a thread a few days ago in which I posted an image of Maggie's Centre in Dundee, with a link to tell you more about the Centre. I also referred to my own personal connection with the place.

I have not concentrated on architectural photography in any way in the past, but am always keen to push myself photographically and see what I'm capable of producing with subjects other than landscapes.

Maggie's in Dundee was designed by leading Canadian/American architect Frank Gehry, who was a personal friends of Maggie Keswick Jencks, after whom Maggie's is named.

So, how am I doing on architectural photography? Your judgement will be much appreciated.

You're doing very well with architectural photography. That's especially noted when I review both images of this building rather than just one of them for a greater understanding of the building's context; it seems to have different impact depending on the viewer's distance from the building and the resulting change in perspective. Surely other differences, such as what is being reflected in the sky and other viewpoints, lend to revisiting the building perhaps more often than most.

If it were not for your desire to remain with a 1:1 format, I'd suggest cropping so the lower left corner splits the roof edge

Or some other variation - if ever a subject might not fit a square aspect ratio, this would surely be it.

However, if that's your style or 'USP', who am I to suggest a change?

Ah, that's true. Hadn't thought about that.

In this context, that's actually a good critique and a good lesson for me to take on board. There is not reason why I need to stick with 1:1 on this and I should have been looking/thinking other formats. Thank you.

It doesn't really matter where we post things Roy, as long as people see them (which you have).

We have two main categories in which to post images - 'People and Pets' and 'Nature & Architecture'. Given that I posted my first image relating to Maggie's Centre in the former, I just kept it going with this one. But, you are right, it would be more appropriate in the other. So, in order to avoid a risk of world disorder, I move this thread across.

Since I use 'Latest Threads' to view what's being posted on the forum, I never pay attention to which sub-categories people use.

Is it architecture or a contemporary composition made from a piece of architecture? It matters not. It's an enjoyable well made image taken in just the right light. (This would have been challenging on a sunny bright day).

Donald - I'm enjoying your new-found direction in exploring architecture too. All those lines add additional compositional and technical challenges. Fortunately, Frank Gehry breaks the mould and while the people who have been asked to construct his designs likely curse him, it makes it a lot more fun to view and photograph.

Nice use of shape, tones, and pattern, will all of your attempts be in b & w? Another element to explore is the affects of light on glass and metal; as presented both are somewhat restrained by monotones.
