Strangest Shelled Caterpillar I've Ever Seen MACRO SHOTS

Ok, obviously joking around. This Snail was hanging out on my siding so I moved him/her/it over to my wooden railing in the backyard and took some macro shots. So excited for Spring/Summer since I love doing macro photography of bugs etc. The hardest part is finding a way to shoot without my flash since it blows out a ton of details on Snails and certain bugs. I had my ISO at 800 for these shots and my noise levels weren't that bad surprisingly. I use a D7100 if you're wondering.

Anyways, what do you think? Pretty cool shelled caterpillar huh?

He's full on sprinting in this pic (glad my shutter speed was high)

It was push and pull there for a while...I don't know which one I prefer...they are both good action shots. I think I like #1 better because of the angle of the shell shot did not the scratches on the second one. Good job.

Very nice photos Zak. Transferring the snail to the wooden railing ws a great idea. I've seen a few discarded shells, but I've never come across a living snail in my photo outings. I see slugs occasionally.

We've got snails everywhere out here in Upstate NY. If you look at bushes or small trees in the woods they're usually found on the branches.

Nice pictures. Why do I a rarely photograph snails. They are more photogenic than slugs. This looks like the white-lipped (banded) snail that we have here. I understand that this (and it brown-lipped counterpart) were introduced across the pond.

BTW snails are neither him nor her nor it. They are both, and can fertilise each other at the same time. They initiate love-making by firing a calcite 'dart' into each other.

I thought that was how snails worked but couldn't remember! Thanks for the info. I was wondering the name of the type of snail and I think you were right.

Pretty much like an RV...going camping, bringing their kitchen sink and beds with the owners, eh?

A baby*snail*usually begins its calcium-rich diet by eating the*shell*of the egg it hatched from, a convenient source of nutrients. As thesnail*continues to grow, its*shell*grows with it. The*snail*produces new*shell*material, like the soft material of its protoconch, that expands its*shell*and then hardens.

Saw a copy of the exact same organism on the main walk in the Japanese Gardens behind the Erie County Historical Society building in Buffalo last Thursday. Gently moved him/her/it off the walkway so the upcoming crowds for the Cherry Blossom Festival wouldn't do him in.

Unusual shell that I hadn't seen before.
