Why it is called a snake fly? ( I guess I should google that question instead...) My favourite here is the last one...I like where it landed too...

Dan, I think it's at least 10 years since I last saw one. They are easy to miss (imo) and I was lucky this one was on the stump of a felled tree. About 3/4 cm in length it was still almost invisible.I don't think I have ever seen one on this side of the pond
Izzie, One of my sources says 'Snakeflies get their name from their long 'necks' and broad flat heads which can be raised above the rest of their body giving the appearance of a snake about to strike.'

Thanks for posting the images, James, particularly of the snakefly. Like Dan, I also haven't seen one in the US. I like the fly on the fern bud, too!
