    Mushroom in Space

I had to try to photograph this after it sat out on the counter overnight - it was becoming more wood like as today progressed. This was handheld in natural light and one small flashlight with a paper towel on it. I used black velvet stretchy pants for the backdrop. All the inspiration on this site makes me want to stretch and experiment. Thanks! This is the first tasty morel of the season for us.

It really does look like wood! (I felt that way before having the benefit of your narrative.) You were very creative in your choice of your tools and materials. Your lighting reveals the shape of the subject, especially in its upper area, and if you wanted it to appear as if it was floating, you did that very effectively by preventing a shadow from being displayed on the tabletop. I'm always a sucker for diagonals, so of course that characteristic appeals to me.

Consider making the image less static by moving the subject off-center either by cropping or using a different composition at the time of capture.

Your title suits your image. I love mushrooms and have it almost everyday in my cooking. Health benefit is not as effective if eaten raw. I have not seen this kind of mushroom though...what is it called?

This is a Morel. Morels are not that closely related to the usual 'toadstood' fungi, but they have similar growth habits. They are unusual in that they appear mainly in the spring rather than the autumn. They are highly esteemed gastronomically so do try them if you can find them. Beware though there is a false morel which is not edible (it can make some people sick).

I eat them almost every day too. This is a spring Morel, my husband's favorite. They are a bit elusive for us though they grow quite plentiful in this area and beyond. This one came from our neighbor's yard :-) we will hunt up some more at higher altitudes in a couple of weeks or so.

I'm still watching it dry! - it'll be good dried too. Thanks much Janis.
