Just got home this afternoon from having spent a few days over in Ireland visiting my aunt. She now lives alone in the house where she (and my mother) were born, 80+ years ago. Neither my aunt nor her brother, my uncle now deceased, ever married. They lived together in that house their whole lives. My mum came across to Scotland to work when she was a teenager.

The picture in this image probably hung in that exact place on the wall when they were kids.

As always, your critical analysis of the image is welcomed.

Beautiful juxtaposition ..and terrific metaphors

it tells a story and the narrative is very strong ..one that is all too familiar to those of us with Irish decendants.

Stunning depiction...but not one you want to show the fire safety people.

Donald, a hauntingly evocative image for me, and absolutely 'authentic' in black and white... at least that is the way I still 'see' my Grandparents house.

I have a spinster aunt down in Cavan, now 95, and like your aunt she lived alone in the grandparents house until a couple of years ago, when she finally agreed a move into sheltered accommodation. She is blind, very deaf, and extremely frail.. not that she considers that any reason to 'slow up'. She put up a fierce struggle with the cousins, (and me), to stay where she was, and still 'hopes' to return when she is fit to get up the stairs under her own steam!

There is still a Sacred Heart in the old house, though the 'eternal' light is now out. It certainly did not change position in 66 years!

The electric is even similar, and I have 'frustrating' memories of trying to drill into flint brick walls to put up a pelmet for her, back in the 70's.

I'm heading over to see her in a few weeks but it won't be the same as walking into the old homestead.

Great shot and well done... The hard times in Ireland have benefited the world with the exodus of the Irish to other English speaking (and many non-English speaking) lands.

I recently posted a picture of my G-G-G Grand Aunt who was born in County Clare before 1800 and migrated to Texas under a Mexican Land Grant about 1829-30. Her husband was killed fighting in the Texas Revolution against Mexico in 1836 and her brother signed the Texas Declaration of Independence at Goliad in 1835...

A vision of the past...

Of course, I have also benefited from the exodus of my other ancestors, the Scots and Ulster Scots (Scots-Irish is the term used here) who migrated to American in our early days.

My aunt, severely crippled with arthritis, has no problem whatsoever leaving, at 10pm every Tuesday evening, to go out to her weekly poker session, from which she arrives home at about 3am. Me? I went to bed!!

RCD = Residual Current Device. The unit in the centre of the power sockets that is labelled press to test, could be one. Under a fault condition the device will cut off the power to any items that are connected through it.

However, I'm a little confused. I always thought Jesus started his work life as a carpenter, not an electrician.

When I first opened this image Donald, my first reaction was "does that wiring meet current electrical code requirements?".

I guess that's why the picture of Christ is strategically placed there.

Manfred - I think you can very safely assume that it doesn't even come close to meeting regulations. Once you stepped into the bedroom in which I was sleeping, things became even more interesting.

But would still welcome comments on the image.

i think it is an amazing image.

It captures all the atmosphere of the Ireland that your Aunt grew up in...that your mother was born to..just like my family.A very special record both emotionally...and factually.

The Electrical chaos is beautifully juxtaposed with the 'Jesus' picture.....

I can believe it!

The image definitely caught my eye. The mix of the electrical components and religious symbolism intertwined seem to somehow work together. The picture reminds me of the one that my grandmother used to have in her bedroom.

I'm suggesting creating separation in that area by making the wall and the frame dissimilar using whatever method or combination of methods Donald chooses. I really don't think it matters what method he chooses.

A very apt title. It's good to see The Lord Jesus watching over the power. I really like the lighting, very skillfully done. My great granny came form Ireland and although electricity wasn't invented in her day two bob says there was a picture of Jesus on the wall.
