That is one of the Empis species, Les. Empis tessellata is the commonest one but yours looks a little different. Several similar Empis species look rather similar so they can be tricky to fully identify.
They are interesting flies which often feed from flowers but also take other flies as prey. Sometimes you will find a mating pair where the female is feeding from a captured fly prey at the same time.

Very intriguing specimen...if I looked at just the top, I can imagine many science fiction books I used to read as a child. those shapes, the demeanors...the play acting...scary. But it is fly...so I told myself to settle down. It is just a picture...nice ones too as it invokes memories.
