    Lipstick

Long ago I wanted to try this kind of photo, I start:
Photo taken on a ceramic glass plate with my ringflash (only LED continuous source at my disposal), a piece of black cardboard as a background that I can easily move to realize the unsightly reflections. (I tried my best to do the dust hunt)
I know the lipstick is not perfectly new so his head is a bit weird.
I like the lines on the cover which are in fact anti-theft label.
I didn't get nice effect of the cover which is translucent red, I think i need to improve my lights with a small flash lighting just it, but it's another picture
It's up to you to judge, c & c welcomed

I like this very much. I do not do still life photography, but am fascinated by lighting set ups.

In terms of the overall composition, I did wonder why you included so much space above the lipstick. I considered what impact cropping from the top to make a 4:5 ratio picture, would have.

As soon as I proposed the same picture on 500 px, I said to myself that i could reduce the 2x3 format to 4x5.

    Re: Lipstick

My mind apparently is not great (not that everyone doesn't already know that!) because I disagree about preferring to crop at the top. The two subjects so nicely reach up to the negative space that the composition feels very comfortable to me. Nobody likes tight crops more than me but this is one time I prefer leaving all the negative space as is.

A lot of people would complain that the subjects are clearly marred from use and would suggest that you use a brand new lipstick and cover as the subjects. I admire that you photographed the used subjects. I like the somewhat grungy style of the photo because it complements and perhaps even enhances the so-called flaws in the subjects.

The only dust that I see is one speck in the bottom left corner and I see that only when viewing the image at a larger size than the size automatically displayed in the thread.

Notice that detail is lost in the left side of both subjects. The result is that the shape of that side is lost as is the separation between that side of the subjects and the background. That's strictly a matter of lighting. I've never used a ring flash but I can imagine that the lighting required to improve those details would be difficult using only a ring flash.
