    Grass and Antelope Bush

We bought a vacation/retirement home in the desert of southern BC. For most people the attraction seems to be the 50 plus wineries and 20 golf courses within 50 km. For me the attraction is the ecosystems The valley and surrounding mountains encompass a spectrum from desert to alpine, all of which I am itching to explore and photograph. I worked in the area in 1975 as a range ecologist, however the intervening 42 years have stripped most plant identities, especially the grasses, from my memory.

This was taken on the last trip in May. Antelope Bush is the dominant shrub in a very endangered ecosystem on the valley floor. This was a dead and still standing stem from a fire in 2008. Fire is an essential part of the ecology, a few of the larger, older antelope bushes will burn but the majority survive and thrive.

Hi Trevor: I very much like the stark black and white treatment of this image. The grass looks so forlorn, yet it is quite beautiful.
