    Between the stones

Two of the boundaries of the land at my sister's house consist of old (at least 1920s) stone walls known as dry state dikes (dry stone walls) built by careful selection of stones and their placement - no mortar is used to bind them.

The interfaces between the stones make natural places for mosses, lichens and some wild flowers. I spotted these when visiting today. I have no idea what they are but was struck by the contrast between the grey/white and the surrounding green.

I deliberately left the out of focus heads at the bottom uncropped.

Very nice...are they as such or just before their falling off?

Thanks Nandakumar. I'm not sure where they are in their lifecycle; it was a new, small (approx 8cm), patch of bright green lichen that attracted me, but after developing the image it was the structures shown that stood out.

I tend to agree with Brian.

Bill, do you have other shots showing the rest of plant, or only the dead flowers? I'm curious what it is.

well the bright green/yellow buds look to be a stonecrop - the flowers of some are often on stalks with multiple flowers so could well be the old flowers gone to seed from last year

I agree. The plant may very well be some type of stonecrop -- the habitat in a stone wall would be correct.

But I have no idea about the different types of stonecrop in Scotland (or anywhere in the UK for that matter!).
