Re: Magnum Swapper
Thanks for the link, Peter.
Hurn says two things, which to my mind, are key. First, he says: "What I recognized instantly then was the extraordinary ability of photography to evoke memory, and how powerfully it could do that." This reminds me of something that was said on this site last year when we were treated to a page by page review of Adams' book Example: The Making of 40 Photographs by two of the best 'togs on CiC - that is, that one of Adams' photos reminds me of . . . For me, memories are one of the key reasons why I make images - so that I can remember the place or the day or the event or whatever it is that I want to remember. Isn't that one reason why we all do what we do? To help us remember?
Secondly, on the technical side of our art, Hurn says a requirement is " . . . an impeccable command of the technical side. . . . it has got to the point with [the best of the best] that they don't have to think about it." That is, reading the light, setting the settings, selecting the lens, placing the camera relative to the subject, et.al., is instinctive for the very best. This is where most of us struggle, and Hurn says the only way to achieve that ability - is continual and constant practice. Our friend Donald reminds us of this with some regularity, and it seems to me, to be excellent advice.
This is an excellent article and I hope everyone here will take the time to read it. We can all learn from it.
Thanks again Peter for posting the link.
