Moonlight and aurora

This last Wednesday the combination of a half moon, clear calm sky and a decent aurora sent me out into the night. The moonlight was enough to light the marsh, foreground is needed to give context to the northern lights. Nice to not have to push the shadows for once and deal with the grainy noisy result.

I was hoping the display would be overhead and more to the northwest so I could get the reflection on the calm water. No such luck Still; worth the trip. And not cold either by my standards; minus 2C .

One of these days I'm going to find myself up north on a clear night so I can enjoy it.

One of these days I'm going to find myself up north on a clear night so I can enjoy it.

One of my goals is to go to Yellowknife and photograph the aurora. I have several clients who have worked there, they say the aurora in the NWT are a least a degree of magnitude better than here.

I see many images taken in northern Norway, probably a good choice for Europeans, but given the normal auroral pattern we actually have the best auroras in north central Canada. I have never been here but this seems a reasonable option http://auroravillage.com/

Amazing shots! You’re lucky to be able to see the aurora without venturing far from home. I’ve only seen them twice and they’re pretty spectacular.

I have been chasing the green lady for a while now (locally) and while we are well within the northern circle where it is typically visible every time I have gone out we have cloud cover

Clouds are a real bother. Friday night wa predicted to be strong display. 100%cloud cover

We see the aurora in northern Minnesota but not in Wyoming. Two years ago I met a guy there who had planned a 7 mile drive on a dirt road followed by a two mile hike through the woods at night to catch the aurora. This guy did not seem too "outdoorsy" and I told him not to wait for me. It clouded over and he did not get the pics he wanted.

Even with a forecast for a strong aurora, and a clear night forecast, i am not sure I would do that. Just too unpredicatable

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! I found Dawson Creek, BC on the map. You are pretty far north. Yeah, I don't do half of the adventuresome things I used to do. Backpacking into mountain lakes for fishing, wading deep, fast water to catch the elusive steelhead, not worth the risk of getting injured.

One of the reasons I no longer do risky and potentially dangerous things is I now realize I do not have to seek out bad things; they will find me.
