Hollow Rock
I'm back in Minnesota for a surgical procedure on Tuesday so I made a beeline for the North Shore of Lake Superior this weekend. The weather was cold and overcast. Here are some pics of the Hollow Rock on the Grand Portage Reservation taken while playng around with a ND filter.

We had to make a quick exit Sunday morning as my son had a flare-up of his inflammatory arthritis. He's feeling a little better now.

Re: Hollow Rock
That misty water looks good with the frozen, nicely seen and captured.

Re: Hollow Rock
John, thanks. It was a rotten cold misty day but it was great to get out as I have not been out much in the last few weeks. Along with the Split Rock Lighthouse the Hollow Rock is one of the most photographed sites on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is easy to get close to it in the winter as one can park about 50 feet from the shoreline as opposed to the lighthouse where it is a hike over rocks covered with ice most of the time.

Re: Hollow Rock
Beautiful photographs Paul. The ice on the small rock island is fantastic.

Re: Hollow Rock
Yep, the dodge applied in the second one gives the features on the hollow rock better attention.

Re: Hollow Rock
#2 for me as well. Dodging those shadow areas really helps the image. You might want to consider cleaning up those "dust bunnies" while in PP; there are quite a few noticeable in the sky when viewing with Lightbox.

Thanks for the comments. There is another object on Lake Superior called the Spirit Tree that I would like to photograph sometime. The only issue is that it is on sacred tribal land and one needs to be accompanied by a member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe tribe.

Re: Hollow Rock
I just made plans to visit the North Shore in the beginning of February. The Hollow Rock in cold weather is incredible. Ice, snow, waves crashing, etc. Last year the wind chill was minus 48 degrees Fahrenheit so we didn't venture that far north. Hopefully the weather will be a little more accommodating.
This will probably be my last trip to the area as we will be in Wyoming full time next September.
