John you probably have it right, however I will just state this anyway. On page 57 it shows Mode, Auto and Custom, select Custom with, off (no colour adjustment) if you are letting Photoshop, Elements, or Lightroom manage colour. If you select "auto" and have Elements to manage colour you will get into a conflict as each one wants of control colour management. If you are doing B&W printing then select Advance B&W Printing.

As time goes on and I read more and more imagery viewing recommendations, I'm beginning to think that photographers are akin to vampires.

1. Edit your images in dark environments.
2. view your images in daylight environments or daylight bulb lighting.
3. Shoot your best images at dusk/dawn.
4. Don't shoot during midday, 10AM-3PM.

No wonder they invented artificial lighting.

I want to follow this thread this year and, perhaps, get up to speed enough to join in next year. I really need to learn to print well, but know I will not be able to really concentrate this year. Is it ok if I as questions as the year goes along?

No pressure. There is nothing to prevent you from trying a few prints from time to time just to see what works for you and what does not and using the CiC forums to learn this aspect of photography.

I got hooked on printing many years ago, watching a B&W print come out in the wet darkroom for the first time. I was "hooked" on creating a print at that point and have moved further along in the print making process ever since.

Manfred and all. This is the first time I am reading this thread. Great idea.
Let me try to drop a few lines about my experience regarding printings and legacy.

A couple of years ago I became a follower of LensWork and to make it short, I was inspired to design my own Folios. I designed them and ordered them. They allow until 5 prints of fine art paper protected by tracing paper. Perhaps I am making a mistake here because I do not know if this paper is acid free...
They look like this:

The size is the modest A5
The printer is my own: the Epson Photo R3000
The paper ? Epson Fine Art Gold Fibre Silk 310 gsm - colour and B&W
I use sometimes other icc profiled papers like Canson.
On the back of each print my own references, at the bottom and in draft
The monitor is calibrated by a Spyder and the icc profile adequate for the paper.
To make things easier I print only from LR

I tend to print Folios by themes. I already have some, in spite of having been lazy lately...
Why all this ? Precisely as a legacy for my son and daughter. I usually say: for them to throw away and I laughs !
One never knows...
But speaking of legacy I also have A3+ but that is something I do not do any more. A5 is just fine.

Today I went to the market and offered the photo of the young woman I had shot the other day. This image has been worked hard because of the useful advices Manfred and others told me. Tomorrow (now it is 10PM) I will talk to her and ask if she was happy with the photo as today she was working...
My prints in A5 are presented like this.

Now... if I am missing something and this is out of topic I will be glad you tell me and erase the post if necessary.
In fact, I have not read all the posts but only the first ... ten or so.
