    Earth Shadow

A bit of esoterica. The blue below the pink is the shadow of the Earth projected onto the sky before sunrise; the pink is a sunrise for someone south of me (The shot is looking due north)

This is my latest obsession. Going out two hours before sunrise (which is 9:30 am for me currently) and shooting using the ambient light up until sunrise . The exposures range a bit depending on the conditions. I have lots of time and just adjust the histogram to be just a bit shy of to the right.

Quite like the soft diffuse light. And it works quite brilliantly with the snow, enough to give texture without the harsh shadow and higlights cast once the sun is over the horizon.

I love this light. I have a few of similar skies, but. after sunset looking south-ish

    It works.

Understanding the light is what makes our photography successful and you have demonstrated that you have done that.

    Three things:
    Beautiful light
    Great Shot
Very civilized time to get up so early before sunrise!

This is beautifully done. I love the subdued colours. Would it work in B&W also? Perhaps not as striking.

There are advantages to a six hours of daylight with a weak anemic sun only just clearing the horizon. Well maybe only one.

I suspect that you forgot to mention that the night is usually coldest around sunrise, so getting out and shooting at 9:30 AM will have its drawbacks.

On the other hand, in another 6 months, you would probably have to get up around at before 3:00AM to get morning sunrise shots.

The sunset shots at 10 pm are alright. Sunrise always seems to elude me in summer. I have debated staying up all night, so far good sense has prevailed
