Ever heard of Bayard Wootten? Worth a read...

This article appeared in the NY Times recently. She seems like an amazing woman...

Had never heard of this lady. The number of women one reads about who fought because they had no choice, is remarkable.

Thanks Donald. What gets me is that along with all that she apparently designed the Pepsi logo! I wonder if she got much out of that little exercise.

I recall that in 1971 Carolyn Davidson, a young graphic artist was approached to design the swoosh for the very embryonic Nike company. At that stage the owner was selling shoes from the back of a station wagon. She was offered either shares in the company or a lump sump payment of only a $35. She chose the lump sum - understandable perhaps but in retrospect a costly decision!

In the end Nike threw her a massive party to celebrate her creativity, and long after the event, she was also given a generous amount of stock in the company (estimated to be worth upwards of $1,000,000), as well as a diamond and gold ring featuring the Swoosh design. Justice eventually prevailed.

I love reading about early photographers and especially female photographers. They had to not only fight against the technical limitations of the gear in that era but, also fight the prejudices of a male dominated world...

I had never heard of this lady, but she was obviously motivated, talented and very successful. I had to smile when I learned that the chap who loaned her a camera to start took it back in fear of her success!
