Week 1--Urban Facades--

I don't really have a theme for this year so I will post what I shoot and see where that goes. I am always interested in contrast (form, line, color) and living in a ever more dense city gives me lots of architectural options.

Nice start to the 52, I'd crop out that dizzying pattern at the bottom though.

Yes, agreed. I think you can just about get away with a crop from the bottom without causing any problems with the horizontal lines.

Thanks John and Geoff--I puzzled about the additional context added by the bottom roof and the distraction. Left it in and appreciate getting your thoughts.

My reaction was that I wished there were more of the roof, Judith. I like the colour and the texture of it and the angle of the roof line is an interesting counterpoint to the angles in the windows. Without more volume, though, it does feel more like a distraction than a deliberate part of the composition.

Week 2--Backyard Birds--another forum was having a go at backyard birds this week. I am not much of a wildlife photographer but do have a pretty busy backyard. I was impressed with my new DX7500 since I was shooting through the kitchen window.

Thanks! It is a 70-300 Nikkor (kit lens) --In 2017 I was challenged by someone on Cambridge to really learn about sharpening in my post processing. That helped alot!

Week 3--Skagit Valley Sunset

I am one-armed for a few weeks so am limited. Nonetheless we took a day trip to the Skagit to see the snow geese and swans. Lots of them everywhere. But I brought back a sunset that I liked

I also missed week #2, you can't go wrong (mostly) with a bird shot nicely captured. My one qualm with shooting birds is identifying the species, I could never do a Big Year. For North American birds I usually use this website to try and identify. http://whatbird.com/ There are also links to other areas.

Week #3 looks ok when viewed with the Lightbox, looks a bit pixeled around the horizon and the foliage appears a bit muddy. I see it was shot with the Coolpix which doesn't always fair well in lowlight conditions. Nice effort.

Agree--but I could work one handed. I think this week I may be able to put my tripod into play and get back to my best camera.

Hi Judith - I feel for you! A few years ago, I was also stymied by the loss of use of one arm. Definitely no fun to be in that position! I hope you recover quickly!

I appreciate your tenacity to capture a photo for your project. I like the texture of the clouds and the shading. It must have been a mostly cloudy/sunny day to be out!

Week 5--Rialto Beach winter surf

I tried this in b/w but couldn't make it work. The upper right corner is blown out. How much of problem is that given the subject? Would nd filter help that issue?

Normally I would use a soft graduated neutral density filter (3-stop or 2-stop) if I am worried about the sky blowing out, but when I do a screen capture of this image and load it into Adobe Camera Raw, the sky is not blown out, but the shadow detail is crushed (shown in the blue areas). The highlight clipping indicator shows no highlight clipping, so you have a bit of headroom.

The lighting conditions are already giving you a fairly monochromatic image and in my view, this is more effective than doing a monochrome conversion.

Thanks! I see now that the shadow detail on the left island is just not there and that what I thought was blown was just at the edge of blown. Thanks for the screen print!
