    Side Lit Cacti

The previous very nice backlit cactus shot by Greg reminded me of these side lit cacti shots I did several years ago when I was traveling with a 30D and a 40D as my two camera bodies...

    1. EOS 30D with 17-55mm f/2,8 IS lens at 45mm... ISO 250, f/6.7 at 1/250 second + CPLFilter

    2. EOS 30D with 17-55mm f/2,8 IS lens at 35mm... ISO 250, f/8 at 1/250 second + CPL filter

Looking at this one now, I don't like the OOF portion of the cactus. I didn't own a Hoodman Loupe at that time and I have a hard time seeing the LCD in bright sunlight. If I had realized a portion of the cactus was OOF, I would have stopped down to f/11 or perhaps even f/16...

I started shooting cacti because they don't blow around in the wind like other flora and over time I have come to appreciate their beauty which needs the right light to be revealed. These are two nice specimens, Richard, and the first one is well captured. As you say, it is shame about the OOF in the second.

Two nice shots. The OOF bits in the second don't detract for me.

Good shots both. I prefer #2 because it looks a lot like how I see things. Maybe it is just my eyes but I find that when I look at something both the fore and back ground are a little blurred. I am beginning to appreciate that quality in photographs.
